August’s Colour of the Month – 10A Light Ash Blonde

August 14 2023 by: Jo M

Well, the Great British Summer hasn’t been quite as great as we were hoping weather-wise, but if you have got away this holiday season and you’re finding your blonde is looking a little brassy, August’s Colour of the Month might just be the shade for you…

What kind of colour is it?

10A Light Ash Blonde is the very lightest shade we have in the Naturtint Permanent Gel range, equal to the 10N Light Dawn Blonde – if you’re familiar with the Naturtint code, which follows the same industry scale as most hair colours, a 10 is a very light colour and 1 the very darkest colour. Unlike the 10N however, the 10A contains ash tones to create a cooler, more beige blonde than a warm blonde like the 10N. The other ash tones in the ‘Ash’ family are 8A Ash Blonde and 6A Dark Ash blonde which are two and four shades darker respectively, than the 10A.

Can anybody wear this colour?

Being a 10, the Light Ash Blonde can only be used on hair that is naturally an 8 or lighter – like most home hair colours, Naturtint can only lighten by one or two shades so although 10A could occasionally be used on a base 7 (definitely do a colour strand test!), the 8A would be a more appropriate colour.

If you have been lightening your blonde hair and found it’s looking brassy, or even if you are just using a hair colour to hide those greys but finding the colour being produced is too warm, the 10A might be the shade you need to consider switching to.

Blue and violet/purple tones, which are what the colour ash stems from, are opposite yellow and orange on the colour wheel, so by adding ash tones to a colour that is looking too warm or brassy, those tones are neutralised.

How do I care for it?

To keep a Light Ash Blonde cool, invest in neutralising cleansing products that will top up those blue/violet pigments to banish brassiness and keep your blonde bright.

The Naturtint Silver Shampoo & Silver CC Cream are rich in such pigments and instantly remove yellow undertones and balance out any warmth creeping in. Both products are a very intense purple colour, so we definitely recommend using gloves when you use them!

If you are using the 10A to cover grey, you’ll likely find that you can get away with longer periods between applications, as the grey roots are far less visible against the ash blonde shade. Because you’re leaving it longer however, you need to take care of your colour to reduce fade, so in addition to using neutralising products once a week or fortnight, we also recommend using daily cleansing products that have been specifically formulated for coloured hair. Naturtint’s Colour Fixing Shampoo and Protective Conditioner are both formulated with natural and organic plant and seed oils and extracts that strengthen and rejuvenate hair, to prolong the life and vibrancy of your colour.
