July’s Colour of the Month – 9N Honey Blonde

July 10 2023 by: Jo M

It’s the season for much needed getaways and summer breaks – and it’s also the season lots of us opt for a more sun kissed look for our hair, taking inspiration from beachy waves, sun-bleached shades and festival favourite looks. So, it will come as no surprise that July’s Colour of the Month is 9N Honey Blonde – one of the lightest shades in our natural (N) family of colours and last year’s 9th most popular shade from the whole range!

What kind of colour is it?

All shades look different from one person to the next depending on their base shade, but the 9N Honey Blonde, being a very light shade will work with a user’s natural or pre-existing tones to create a truly unique shade. Light, but not quite the lightest blonde in the range (that award goes to the 10N Light Dawn Blonde!), the Honey Blonde is an ‘N’ shade so there are no warmer, golden tones added to the blend, but lots of us tend to give off a warmer colour result when we lighten hair – if you don’t want those warmer tones, try blending an ash tone such as the 8A (Ash Blonde) or 10A (Light Ash Blonde) to counteract the golden hue.

Can anybody wear this colour?

Not quite! When colouring hair at home, you can only really lighten by one or two shades (consider the colour scale, with 1 being black and 10 the lightest blonde), so unless you are naturally a mid/dark blonde or lighter (at least a 7 or above), sadly this isn’t the colour for you. If you are naturally fair however, it’s a lovely natural-looking blonde that is ideal for disguising those pesky greys – blondes can get away with root regrowth for a lot longer with lighter shades than you can darker shades (sorry to our brunette beauties!).

As discussed above, some customers benefit from blending an ash tone in with the 9N if they want to cool the blonde down a little – blue and violet tones (which make up the ash colour) are opposite yellow and orange on the colour wheel, so when blended together they cancel each other out.

How do I care for it?

To keep lighter colours bright and healthy-looking, invest in a deep conditioning mask – coloured blonde hair has a tendency to dry out quickly, which can dull strands and make the hair feel less silky, so putting back lost moisture is important to maintain shine and condition. There are a number of deep conditioning products in the Naturtint range so you’ll be sure to find the one that’s right for you and your hair!

You should also consider a shampoo and conditioner designed specifically for blonde hair – the Naturtint Silver Shampoo & Silver CC Cream are rich in neutralising pigments that instantly remove yellow undertones to keep your blonde looking bright and fresh. All colours fade a little between applications but when blonde hair fades, a yellow or brassy tone starts to show – much like the ash we talked about above, the purple pigments in the Naturtint Silver Shampoo & Silver CC Cream will balance out that warmth to keep your colour looking cool.

And when it is time to recolour your hair, stick to a root application only to prevent overprocessing the previously coloured hair, as this will exacerbate dulling and fading. The Naturtint Root Retouch Crème in shade ‘Light Blonde’ is a perfect match for the 9N Honey Blonde and contains all the tools you need and just enough colour to do a quick and easy root touch up!
